At a French chateau, we meet a group of aristocrats gathered to hunt rabbits by day and engage in social activities by night. A love triangle unfolds, but envy also runs rampant among the servants, and both social classes lie with equal ease. The title of the film refers to the rules that governed life for both the upper and lower classes. Breaking these rules had social consequences for both classes.

The Rules of the Game is now considered one of the greatest films ever made, but when it was released in 1939, it was a financial disaster. Director Jean Renoir cut the film down from 113 minutes to 85 minutes, and the full version was not seen until its re-release at the Venice Film Festival in 1956. Film critics and filmmakers have since acclaimed the film, citing it as an inspiration for their work. Robert Altman was heavily inspired by the film when he made Gosford Park (2001) and remarked, “The Rules of the Game taught me the rules of the game.”
