Kosmorama's annual Edith Carlmar Symposium commemorates the International Women's Day at Cinemateket in Olavshallen. The symposium offers an exciting mix of handpicked Carlmar films, lectures, and a conversation with this year's winner of the Edith Carlmar Award, Ingvil Giske. The Edith Carlmar Award has been presented since 2010 to professional female filmmakers who have demonstrated integrity, fearless innovative ability, and a willingness to break boundaries. Since 2018, the award announcement and ceremony has been a part of the program at Kosmorama.
Carlmar was Norway's first female film director, known for films such as Døden er et kjœrtegn (1949), Fjols til fjells (1957), Aldri annet enn bråk (1954), and Ung flukt (1959). The film award bears Edith Carlmar's name to honor her legacy. The winner of the Edith Carlmar Award 2024 is Ingvil Giske, she receives a grant of 50,000 Norwegian kroner and a trophy. Previous winners of the award include Žaklina Stojcevska, Margreth Olin, Maria Ekerhovd, Solveig Melkeraaen, Anne Sewitsky, Sara Johnsen, Iram Haq, Tuva Novotny, Andrea Bræin Hovig, Karen Fabritius Gram, Itonje Søimer Guttormsen, and Kajsa Næss.
This year's jury consists of Anne Gjelsvik, professor of film at NTNU, Line Klungseth Johansen, film director and film producer, and Marit Bakken, senior adviser for the arts and culture section at Trøndelag County Council and former head of the Femmina International Film Festival in Verdal.
The Edith Carlmar Symposium is a collaboration between Kosmorama and Midtnorsk Filmsenter.
