Samia

SAM TIFF 8 Bit rec1886 FULL 0106345

Where: Trondheim Kino

If you didn't get time to watch Samia at Kosmorama 2025 here's your chance! This film is returning to the big screen this week.

Samia, a young girl from Mogadishu in Somalia, has a passion: she loves to run! From childhood, she would run through the streets of Mogadishu, despite the fundamentalist regime in the country forbidding women from running.

Her talent is noticed, and at the 2008 Olympics she runs the 200 meters for her country wearing borrowed shoes. This brings her international attention, and she becomes a symbol of women’s struggle for the freedom to decide over their own lives and dreams.

When she returns to her homeland, the threats from the fundamentalist group al-Shabaab grow increasingly serious. They dislike her defiance of their bans and orders against women—and even more so that she is celebrated for it by the global community. Samia sets out on a journey to pursue her dream of running. It becomes a fateful one.

The film is based on the true story of Samia Yusuf Omar, and inspired by Giuseppe Catozzella’s critically acclaimed novel Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid.

RoboCop

MCDROBO EC006

Where: Cinemateket

Welcome to Detroit, 2029. The city has long since collapsed, and crime runs more rampant than ever. The police force has, of course, been privatized, and the corporation Omni Consumer Products launches the half-mechanical policeman RoboCop to deal with the chaos. RoboCop is built from the remains of the slain officer Alex Murphy combined with the most advanced robotic technology in Detroit. The result is a fearless, just, and uncompromising enforcer of the law who cleans up the streets with weapons in hand.

RoboCop was a huge success when it premiered in 1987, but its highly graphic depictions of violence caused major problems with censorship. The film was heavily cut in most countries, including Norway. However, during the censorship amnesty of the early 2000s, audiences here finally got to see the fully uncut version of this masterpiece. And considering the direction Detroit—and the United States—has taken in recent years, perhaps Verhoeven’s satirical vision of a violent society in collapse isn’t so far from the truth after all?
