Does it feel like too long of a wait until Kosmorama in week 10? Don't miss out on the 36th edition of the Minimalen Short Film Festival 2024! Minimalen will showcase more than 230 unique short films from Tuesday, January 23rd, to Sunday, January 28th, 2024, at Nova Kinosenter and Cinemateket Trondheim.

Kosmorama's friends at the Minimalen Short Film Festival are ready to fill Nova and Cinemateket with hundreds of short films, and this is an event you definitely don't want to miss! Join us for a handpicked and curated selection of both Norwegian and international short films from morning until night this week.

Here, the Kosmorama staff has selected some highlights from the program that we are particularly excited about.

Opening Screening at Nova Kinosenter

The opening screening is a must to kickstart the festival week!
Minimalen and Midtnorsk Filmsenter invite you to a festive performance in Liv Ullmannsalen. In the first half, Midtnorsk Filmsenter will present two new short productions from regional filmmakers. In the second half, Minimalen will showcase some films and previews from the festival program that awaits throughout the week.

Horror: Ramaskrik presents

Horror enthusiast Miriam from the communication department is particularly excited about Friday night at 11:00 PM when a selection of horror films is screened at Cinemateket in collaboration with the Ramaskrik Festival from Oppdal. We'll get to revisit the Dutch film "Gnomes," which was well-received at the Ramaskrik Festival in October 2023. Additionally, there seem to be many more terrifyingly good film experiences on this program.

Ugly Animation

In the Ugly Animation program, curator Aneta Ozorek explores the changes in beauty standards in animation and how it affects the perception of the architecture of future animated worlds. Discover the ugliness in all its glory with works by artists playing with perception and colors outside the lines, literally. This is a selection of the prophets of a new religion: Ugly is the New Beautiful.

Nordic Competition Program

At Minimalen, there is both a Nordic and an international competition program, with awards presented on Sunday during the festival week. In the Nordic program, 42 films (23 from Norway and 19 from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden) compete for several prestigious prizes. These films are screened in the NOR section, spanning 6 programs of Nordic and Norwegian films in competition. The directors are presented at the beginning of each program, and later in the evening they talk about their film in Meet the filmmakers.

International Competition Program

INT is Minimalen’s International Competition for shorts from all over the world except the Nordic countries (the Nordic and Norwegian films compete in the NOR section). 37 of the best new shorts worldwide have been selected and are presented in six programmes. The directors are presented right after their film is screened, and the audience gets the opportunity to ask questions.
