After hours

Afterhours

Where: Cinemateket

After Hours
is one of Martin Scorsese's very, very best – yet it's rarely referred to as a masterpiece. As a film lover, one might perhaps be grateful for that very fact, as part of the appeal of After Hours lies precisely in the lack of a clear appeal. The film follows a sort of surrealist logic, where a series of peculiar events and coincidences unfold one after another. An indefinable and tantalizing paranoia pervades the film, but above all, it's a free-flowing journey through a mysterious New York universe over the course of one night.

The atmosphere Scorsese conjures up in After Hours is truly unparalleled. We're introduced to a variety of character types and environments that shape New York into a living organism at night: Thugs, loners, sadomasochists, artists. The city is portrayed as impossible to grasp, thus becoming captivatingly adventurous. Programmer Paul is our ticket in, and we witness the absurdities that arise through his perspective. Scorsese's immense cinematic intuition imbues selected situations, people, and objects with an extra dimension – moments where one begins to wonder if there's something more skewed, more suspicious, behind the concrete surface.
