The trainees Lone and Brieta gained a unique insight into festival planning.
Read about how the trainees Lone-Sophie and Brieta have enjoyed their time at Kosmorama!
From week 39 to week 43, Kosmorama has been fortunate to have the trainees Lone-Sophie and Brieta from VG2 Administration, Security and Service with us. Over three eventful weeks, they’ve gained insight into what it’s like to work behind the scenes at a film festival, from practical office tasks to creative planning and evaluating films for the program
Expectations
Both had expectations of gaining more insight into administrative work and collecting new experiences, and maybe having a bit of fun along the way. They admit they were a little nervous before starting, especially about how they would be received by the staff, but the reality turned out to be much more relaxed than expected.
“It’s been very different from what we imagined, much less stressful than we thought,” they say.
Got to experience what it’s like to work at a festival behind the scenes
Throughout their internship, they got to try their hand at many different tasks: watching and evaluating films for various target audiences, entering information into the festival program, developing merchandise, and planning both real and fictional events.
One of the most enjoyable assignments was creating a fictional event. Through the planning process, they gained a whole new appreciation for just how much organization and attention to detail go into each individual screening during the festival.
“We really got to see how much actually needs to be in place for a film screening to happen.” – Lone-Sophie
They also shared that the internship gave them a new perspective on everything happening behind the scenes at a film festival. Some of the work reminded them of what they’ve learned at school (such as using spreadsheets, planning, and marketing) but much of it was entirely new. They saw firsthand how small details can make a big difference in festival work, and how different departments need to collaborate to make everything run smoothly.
“At school we’ve worked a lot with spreadsheets, marketing, and event planning, but here it’s been much more detailed than what we’re used to from the textbooks. We’ve had to think outside the box many times.” – Lone-Sophie
“It was exciting to experience how theory from school turns into real work in practice, and to see how much creativity and structure it takes to create great film experiences for the audience.” – Brieta
Both were surprised by how many films are actually watched during the planning process. They quickly learned that the festival team views a large number of films before the final program is set, and that each film is carefully evaluated to find its right place in the festival. During their internship, Lone-Sophie and Brieta even got to take part in this process themselves, particularly in assessing films that might fit Kosmorama’s school program. They practiced reflecting on a film’s target audience, themes, and how its content is communicated in ways that engage different age groups.
“It’s given me a new perspective on film. Before, I only watched movies for entertainment, but now I also see how films can be a tool for learning and discussion.” – Brieta
Shared learning experience
From Kosmorama’s side, it has once again been a pleasure to welcome trainees! Fresh eyes and new perspectives help challenge established ways of working and bring inspiration to our daily routines. The students have shown great enthusiasm and initiative, something that has been both motivating and valuable for the team.
“Having students at the Kosmorama office is always a joy! They take an active part in our work and contribute across all areas of the organization. Getting their input on our workflows, help with marketing, and discussions about target audiences is incredibly rewarding. We hope they leave with a broader understanding of how a cultural organization operates and is promoted.” – Melissa, Producer at Kosmorama
In other words, the internship has been both educational and positive for everyone involved. Lone-Sophie, Brieta, and the Kosmorama team have all gained new experiences and inspiration!
For other students who may have their internship at Kosmorama in the future, Lone-Sophie and Brieta have one clear piece of advice:
“There’s really nothing to be nervous about! You’ve already met and talked to the people you’ll be working with, and everyone is so welcoming. Internship is meant to be fun and educational, not scary, and that’s exactly how it’s been for us at Kosmorama.”
Promotional work in practice: The interns helped ensure good visibility around the city by putting up festival posters.
