“A must-see for anyone who loves musicals,” wrote the reviewer in Aftenposten after the Norwegian premiere of The Greatest Showman in 2018 – adding: “It doesn’t have the ironic edge of Moulin Rouge or the meta-aspect of La La Land, but as a musical it delivers with sawdust flying.”
So, if you’re a fan of catchy songs, spectacular show numbers – and yes, flying sawdust – then it’s time to book your ticket!
The film is based on the life of Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum. Starting out with almost nothing, he had big dreams and an even bigger flair for creative marketing. This would eventually propel him into the spotlight of the American entertainment industry in the 19th century, earning him the nickname “the king of humbug.”
Barnum’s legendary circus featured bearded ladies, little people, Siamese twins – and even the Norwegian giant Henrik Brustad from Ytterøya!
We’re talking about the freak shows of the past, which at their peak attracted tens of thousands of curious, thrill-seeking spectators. The Greatest Showman is, among other things, about celebrating diversity and difference, and daring to defy society’s norms.
A brilliant Hugh Jackman stars as Barnum, with Michelle Williams (five-time Oscar nominee) as his wife Charity. Other key roles feature Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Keala Settle.
