The English pianist Marc Daly lives in Rome, where he makes a living teaching music and composing. He has just finished a conversation with his very drunk friend Carlo on the street outside his home when he witnesses his downstairs neighbor being brutally murdered. When Marc reaches the scene, the killer has vanished. The police begin an investigation, but together with reporter Gianna Brezzi, Marc decides to pursue the case on his own.

The murdered woman, Helga Ulman, was known as a clairvoyant, and there are strong signs she was on the verge of revealing a gruesome secret when she was killed. The clues they uncover keep leading them further, and more bodies turn up along the way. It becomes clear to Marc that he must find the murderer before he himself becomes a victim of their merciless knives.

Sentaro works long days in his little shop, where he makes and sells dorayaki — small pancakes filled with sweet red azuki bean paste, known as an in Japanese.

His everyday life is turned upside down when 76-year-old Tokue insists on working with him. Sentaro is initially very reluctant, but Tokue eventually convinces him with her homemade bean paste, unlike anything he has ever tasted. The pancake stand becomes hugely popular, and sales skyrocket. However, it soon becomes clear that both of them are carrying a secret.

Director Naomi Kawase depicts the flow of life in modern Japan with her characteristic eye for detail and understated drama. This is a warm and charming film that reminds us to savor life fully, with both passion and love — a passion expressed through Tokue’s dedication to Japanese culinary art.
