The Beyond
Where: Cinemateket
Liza has recently inherited an old hotel in Louisiana and is in the process of renovating it, but during the renovations, strange and bloody accidents start occurring. Liza then encounters a mysterious woman who tells her about a dark past, a mysterious book, and that the hotel is built on one of the seven gates to hell.
The Beyond is an Italian horror film from 1981 and one of director Lucio Fulci’s most well-known movies. Incredibly graphic special effects are one of the film’s main features and an iconic aspect of Fulci's films in general—so much so that Fulci earned the nickname “The Godfather of Gore.” At a time when American splatter films were heavily censored by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), Italian splatter films were free to stand out with few, if any, restrictions. The Beyond is now regarded as a cult classic and one of the best splatter films from the 80s. A suspenseful and nerve-racking movie with scenes you’ll definitely remember!
