Typhoon Club

Shinji Somai may be the Japanese director who truly deserves an international retrospective. He is virtually unknown outside Japan, despite being the only auteur director to produce major films during the 1980s, a decade when the Japanese film industry was experiencing its deepest crisis.
Typhoon Club is almost unanimously considered Somai’s best film among his fans, and many regard it as one of the greatest Japanese films ever made. The film follows a group of junior high school students in their everyday lives, both at school and at home. As a typhoon approaches, the students’ inner pain, emotional confusion, and frustrations also begin to emerge more clearly. Nobuhiro Yamashita’s hit film Linda, Linda, Linda (2005) used a similar structure and was a celebration of youth set to the sounds of energetic rock. While the teachers may appear equally foolish, Somai’s film is far more complex and does not shy away from showing the darker sides of adolescence. Internationally acclaimed actress Yuki Kudō made her debut here at the age of 12.

Happy Together

A story of intense love and bitter estrangement between two Asian men on holiday in Buenos Aires.
Lai and Ho were lovers when they traveled from Hong Kong to Argentina. But something went wrong on their road trip through the country. One day, Ho simply leaves. Lai takes a job as a bouncer at a tango bar in Buenos Aires, trying to save enough money for a flight home. Then he meets Ho again. Ho has turned to prostitution and gotten into a fight. Bloodied and bruised, he seeks shelter with Lai. Lai lets him in, but refuses to share a bed with him.
Lai quits his job as a bouncer and starts working in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, where he meets Chang and falls in love with him. But Ho’s situation only continues to deteriorate.
