Where the Wind Comes From follows 19-year-old rebel Alyssa and shy 23-year-old Mehdi, two young people dreaming of escaping their limited reality in Tunis. When they discover an art competition on the island of Djerba, with a prize that could offer them a way out, they embark on an adventurous road trip full of challenges, dangers, and unexpected encounters.
Through vibrant and atmospheric cinematography, the film explores not only their journey but also the social and cultural barriers they face along the way. Alyssa refuses to conform to the expectations placed on her as a young woman, while Mehdi struggles to balance his practical education with his passion for art. Though their friendship is close, it is constantly tested by external circumstances and uncertainty about the future.
With a fresh approach to the genre, where Alyssa and Mehdi’s friendship remains free of romantic clichés, director Toujane Guellaty crafts a story that both entertains and reflects on society’s limitations. A visually striking and thought-provoking film about freedom, hope, and what it truly means to find one’s own path.
