Ten-year-old Laure has moved to a new home and meets the girl next door, Lisa, who thinks Laure is a boy. She introduces herself intuitively as Mickaël, and thus begins her double life, as Laure at home with parents and little sister, and as Mickaël out among friends. With a healthy dash of creativity, she manages to conceal her little secret and builds her new identity. However, the truth inevitably has to come to light at some point, and Laure must take the consequences of what began as an innocent game.
Read moreCéline Sciamma entered the film scene with a whirl with Water Lilies in 2007, a refreshing and plausible film about the at times painful transition from child to young woman. The French director is a master at portraying children, young people and women who try to break free from the barriers constraining them, and Tomboy was an extremely impressive second film from the young talent (Sciamma was 33 years old when Tomboy came in 2011).
Tomboy was filmed incredibly quickly and simply, with the script written in three weeks and the filming starting a couple of months later. Sciamma's production team numbered no more than 14 people, and the budget was under a million dollars. Despite this frugality, Tomboy is an incredibly well-made film, with the extraordinary performances by the child actors, especially Zoé Héran in the role of Laure, which is testament to Sciamma’s level-headed direction.
