Cáit is a quiet and withdrawn nine-year-old girl who is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with some distant relatives for the summer. In her new home she encounters an unconditional kindness she is not accustomed to, but also eventually learns that her foster parents are harbouring a dark and sorrowful secret.

Irish Colm Bairéad (b. 1981, Dublin) is referred to as a talented filmmaker. With a background as a documentary filmmaker, he takes the next step with his first feature film, also the first Irish-language film, The Quiet Girl (An Caulín Ciúin). He wrote the screenplay based on a short story by Claire Keegan. The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale in 2022 where it won the Glass Bear. With rave reviews the awards kept coming at film festivals around the world. The film critic Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian called the The Quiet Girl a jewel and it is nominated for an Oscar
