NOTE! The screening on Friday, March 21, in Prinsen 3 at 11:00 AM is a "knitting cinema," meaning the film will be shown with lighting, and the audience will be able to knit in the theatre during the screening.
In The Day Iceland Stood Still, we gain insight into what happened on October 24, 1975. On that day, 90 percent of Icelandic women put down their work to demand equality—bringing the entire country to a standstill.
In the 1970s, Icelandic society was defined by traditional gender roles, with women having limited rights. They carried the primary responsibility for housework and childcare, earned less than men for the same work, and often only gained access to many opportunities through marriage. Inspired by the global women’s movement, Icelandic women decided that enough was enough.
Director Pamela Hogan and producer Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir explore the event through archival footage, personal stories, and interviews, showing how this groundbreaking action shaped Icelandic society in the years that followed.
