Three children, Bing, Sylvie and Laura, live with their families in a low-income neighbourhood in the Scarborough district of Toronto. Their families are burdened by debt, drug addiction and flimsy job security. This complex story is imbued with misfortune, but is not without a glimmer of hope.
Read moreThe film is based on an award-winning novel by Catherine Hernandez, who herself grew up in Scarborough. Directors Sasha Nakhai and Rich Williamson are also very familiar with the district, and have adapted the novel in collaboration with Hernandez.
Scarborough, which bears similarities to The Florida Project (2017), is a first-hand story about the vulnerabilities of growing up. It is not only an observation of the challenges faced by children at home and at school, but also an optimistic contribution to the discussion about adapted teaching and social differences.
