This year’s opening film at Kosmorama is an energetic story about three women who enter into a three-year pact. They transform themselves into a black metal band called Witch Club Satan, which becomes an unexpected – and controversial – success.
Nikoline, Victoria, and Johanna step onto a music scene defined by mysticism, extremity, and male dominance. Without knowing how to play a single instrument beforehand, they throw themselves into unfamiliar territory, using the genre’s conventions to channel raw, hidden forces – the witches come to life.

The film portrays not only the band’s musical journey, but also the inner transformation that occurs when the masks fall away. At the same time, it delves into a pitch-dark chapter of Norwegian history, when women were condemned and executed for witchcraft. Through a staged trial, the three band members themselves are accused of being witches.
The film is produced by Herstory, a Trondheim-based production company dedicated to highlighting female perspectives in film. HEX is their latest production – a story about liberation, resistance, and reclaiming one’s own voice.
This is a story about taking up space, screaming loudly, challenging both oneself and the world – and daring to unleash your inner witch.
HEX is a film project that experiments with new technology to create a powerful, physical, and embodied experience. Through a research collaboration with Nomono, we have tested and developed the use of ambisonic field recording in documentary filmmaking – combining this type of immersive location sound with a conventional sound mix.
Spatial sound has been used in film for decades, but HEX explores how new, portable technology can be used to capture multichannel audio directly in the field. This approach has given the filmmakers unique methodological and creative freedom, enhancing the film’s sense of presence and atmosphere – both visually and aurally.
