Jaakko and Sirpa have never met face to face, though they do talk on the phone several times a day. When he learns that her illness has worsened, he decides to try to set out and visit her, despite his condition. Jaakko is blind and lame from the chest down, and Sirpa lives rather far away. To get there, Jaakko has to rely on the help of five strangers. What could go wrong?
Read moreThe Blind Man Who Would Not See Titanic is an intense drama shown from the perspective of the blind man. To achieve this, the film is shot with plastic wrap over parts of the lens, and consists mainly of close-ups of the face or hands of the main character, while the rest of the images are somewhat unclear.
Lead actor Petri Poikolainen has the same illness as Jaakko in real life and pulls off an extraordinary lead role in this film. He portrays Jaakko in a heartwarming, funny and all-consuming way. Although he has first-hand experience of what it is like to live with this disease, the story in the film is fictional. Written and directed by Teemu Nikki, the script was written during a summer vacation and then filmed in just over a week, due largely to Poikolainen's ever deteriorating health.
Having received the warmest rounds of applause at the film's premiere in Venice, we also promise that this is a film that simply cannot be missed. It will linger long in your consciousness.
