Sara, a privileged daughter of a politician, and her maid Yarisa have a close relationship, in spite of the obvious class difference between them. As their relationship begins to break down, Yarisa and her family begin to come into conflict with Sara's upper-class family.
Although by no means a particularly violent film, Carajita shows how the consequences of violence can lead to events in which already fragile social and family structures can collapse.
Set and filmed in the Dominican Republic, its powerful acting performances and gripping plot make Carajita a stylish depiction of the hopeless situation that arises when the feeling of ease and trust is erased.
Directorial duo Ulises Porra and Silvina Schnicer won the New Directors Award for this film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2021.
