Anora has a hectic work life like most others, dealing with frustrating customers and colleagues she dislikes. The only difference is that her workplace is a strip club. It’s anything but "just another night at work" when she encounters the son of a powerful Russian oligarch. He promises her a better life—taking her from the stripper pole to a real-life Disney fairy tale! But as soon as the news reaches Russia, the dream begins to crack violently.
This film is part of the Reruns program series. In this series, five of Kosmorama's employees have selected memorable cinema experiences from 2024. Producer Melissa Isaksen is a big fan of Sean Baker and his movies and chose Anora as her favourite from last year.
American indie director Sean Baker made waves when he filmed Tangerine (2015) using three smartphones! His latest film is no exception—Anora is an absolute firecracker of a movie.
A common thread in Baker's films is the neo-realist depiction of marginalized groups and the quest for the American dream - often portrayed as an unrealistic Disney fantasy. His comment is pointed, but understated enough not to overemphasize
