"A Fistful of dollars is the first motion picture of its kind. It won’t be the last!" That was the film's tagline, and rarely have promoters been more right. With A Fistful of Dollars, Leone created nothing less than a new type of film. The fact that the film's plot was nearly identical to Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961) only makes the achievement even greater.

With its distinctive use of camera and sound, groundbreaking portrayal of violence, and Clint Eastwood's iconic character, Sergio Leone simply reinvented the western film. The Italians followed up by making several more western films, and the term 'spaghetti western' became well known.

The plot of A Fistful of Dollars is not the central focus. A man rides into a town where two rival gangs are competing. Instead of moving on, he decides to play them against each other. The story is engaging, but what really impresses is the consistently gritty look at the Wild West, the dry humor, and a blurring of who is good and evil.
