The President s Cake

Olavskino is a collaboration between Olavsfest, Trondheim Kino, and Kosmorama International Film Festival. Every day during Olavsfest, films are shown at Prinsen Cinema Center.

Set in Iraq during the 1990s, The President's Cake follows nine-year-old Lamia, the unlucky winner of an annual tradition: one child is selected to bake a cake for President Saddam Hussein.

Finding all the ingredients for a cake proves to be an enormous challenge. Simply obtaining the essentials needed to survive is already difficult, making something as ordinary as baking powder nearly impossible to find. To make matters worse, if Lamia fails to bake the cake, her entire family faces punishment.

Told with dark humor and a light touch, The President’s Cake never shies away from the serious historical backdrop of its story. The film had its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won both the Audience Award and the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature.
