About the movie
The legend of Johann Faust has been told in various versions – perhaps the best known is J.W. Goethe's epic drama and this impressive film by F.W. Murnau. In the opening scene, the demon Mephisto makes a bet with an archangel: If he can weaken the old alchemist Faust's soul and destroy everything that is divine in him, the Devil will gain dominion over Earth. Mephisto spreads his dark wings over the city where Faust lives and throws down a deadly plague on the inhabitants. To end the plague, Faust signs a contract with Mephisto that has fateful consequences.
