Superstar Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is fired from her TV job as a fitness instructor on her 50th birthday and is forced to confront the fact that her glory days are over. After visiting a doctor, she is offered a mysterious substance that promises to transform her into a younger, more attractive, and "better" version of herself. However, the consequences of this transformation turn out to be far more disturbing than she ever imagined.

Head of communications Miriam Haug, an avid horror film enthusiast, was so captivated by this film that she saw it twice in 2024. The grotesque body horror elements, intense cinematography, and striking use of color made it an obvious choice for her top film experience of the year.
Coralie Fargeat made a name for herself as a fierce feminist horror director with Revenge (2017). With The Substance, she delivers an equally uncompromising critique of modern society, beauty standards, and the perception of women—without any attempt at subtlety. Demi Moore delivers an outstanding performance, earning her first Golden Globe for this role.
