The intensity takes hold from the very first scene as François Ozon adapts Albert Camus’s famous novel of the same name. The story unfolds in Algeria in 1938. The enigmatic Meursault has just lost his mother, but he appears to be largely unaffected by grief. He allows his everyday life to drift forward, guided by chance. When his neighbor Raymond gets into trouble, Meursault is led toward a fateful confrontation on a beach. His life will never be the same again.

Ozon constructs the narrative with cool precision, where small moments gradually lead toward an inevitable rupture. The film is exquisitely shot in black and white, with the harsh sunlight appearing both dazzling and menacing. With an expressionless face, Benjamin Voisin delivers a convincing and restrained portrait of a man who does not fit in.

The result is a fascinating and challenging film that stays close to the existential power of Camus’s novel. At the same time, Ozon lends the story clearer political and human layers, making Meursault’s enigmatic nature even more striking.
