Totsuko is in high school and has a very special ability: she can see the colors of others. These colors are tied to different emotions, and the most fascinating one she sees belongs to her classmate Kimi. By accident, Totsuko claims she can play an instrument, leading her to start a band with Kimi and Rui, a boy they meet in a bookstore. Their collaboration in making music also becomes an opportunity to develop friendships, experience first love, and discover more about each other—and themselves.
With colors and emotions as its visual language, this beautiful animated film explores themes of friendship, the transition from youth to adulthood, and finding one’s own path. At the helm is director Naoko Yamada, known for a number of acclaimed animated films. The Colors Within had its world premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Festival, where it quickly became a favorite among both critics and audiences.
