Two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the sound of air raid sirens has become almost background noise for Ukrainians. While the alarms wail, fresh bread is rolled out from bakeries, and children play in the streets.
Songs of Slow Burning Earth is an intimate audiovisual diary about a country at war, about love for one’s homeland, and about anxieties for the future. It is also a powerful depiction of how humans adapt to the most horrific living conditions. Through eyewitness accounts, the audience gains deep insight into what it’s like to live in constant conflict.
Director Olha Zhurba gathers stories and impressions across regions and generations in her third feature-length film. From the elderly forced to leave their homes to children who turn war into play, Zhurba’s focus on the people at the heart of an unimaginable daily reality makes Songs of Slow Burning Earth an important testimony for both present and future.
