Marianne, a painter, arrives on an isolated island in Brittany in the late 18th century. She has been commissioned to paint a portrait of the future bride Héloïse. Many have tried to paint Héloïse before, but as the only possible way to protest against her arranged marriage, she has flatly refused to pose for portraits.

Marianne pretends to be a maid and takes Héloïse on daily walks, where she can quietly observe her. With the memory of these walks as her only reference, the portrait begins to take shape, but does it reflect who Héloïse really is?

Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire is an exceptionally beautiful film about memories, friendship, love and female unity. The film is also a tribute to the often overlooked female artists throughout history. It became an instant classic and won the award for best screenplay and Queer Palm during the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
