Pigen med nålen (The Girl with the Needle) is inspired by a true and shocking story from Copenhagen in the aftermath of World War I.
Factory worker Karoline’s husband never returns from the war, leaving her unable to pay rent. After an affair with the factory owner, she becomes pregnant and loses her job. When all hope seems lost, she meets Dagmar, who runs an illegal adoption agency. The two women form a close bond, but a horrifying revelation threatens to unravel everything.
The film premiered at Cannes, where it was part of the main competition. Since then, it has been praised for its atmospheric black-and-white cinematography and period-accurate depictions, with an underlying sense of horror. One can glimpse influences from German Expressionist cinema, Carl Theodor Dreyer, and David Lynch.
The result is a captivating and original true-crime drama featuring outstanding performances by Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm. The movie is also Oscar-nominated for Best International Feature Film.
