Oscar Peterson: Black + White is a musical tribute to Oscar Peterson, considered by many to be the best jazz pianist of all time. Born in a working class area of Montreal, he climbed to the top of the jazz world in the late 1940s remaining there until his death aged 82 in 2007.
In this documentary we get a healthy mix of archive recordings and musical elements, including current musicians from different generations recording a selection of Peterson's music in the studio. This combination gives us a mouth-watering insight into his life and music.
More than merely a gifted musician, Oscar Peterson was highly active in issues of social justice. In the face of racism, Peterson used his musical qualities and influence in the fight for equal rights for all. One of his most famous compositions, "Hymn to Freedom", was performed at the inauguration of US President Barack Obama.
Let’s also not forget his significant role in Norway, opening the Olavshallen in Trondheim in 1989.
