Nouvelle Vague takes us back to Paris in the 1950s. Jean-Luc Godard is convinced he can make better films than the ones he critiques – French cinema must be torn down and rebuilt from scratch. In a creative frenzy lasting just 23 days, he makes À bout de souffle (1960), later hailed as a cornerstone of the French New Wave and one of the most influential films of all time. Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague is a playful tribute to a pivotal moment in film history.

“The film premiered at Cannes, where I was lucky enough to see it in a packed cinema filled with film professionals and French audiences. Making a film about making French film is not without risk – especially when you’re not French! To my delight, the screening was filled with laughter. Richard Linklater has created a film that touches the very core and love of filmmaking, with charm and playfulness. You don’t need to have seen À bout de souffle beforehand – just sit back and enjoy a small piece of film history.”
