"I am worth 8 camels, 60 sheep, and 100 goats. No more, no less."
Nawi tells a gripping story of the struggle between tradition and hope. The film follows 14-year-old Nawi, an ambitious girl from Kenya who dreams of starting high school. She is the top student in her class, but her dreams are threatened when she discovers that her father has promised her in marriage to an older man in exchange for livestock.
Nawi’s courage and determination drive the film. She refuses to let go of her ambition for an education, despite opposition from both her family and society. Her story is both tragic and inspiring, portraying love, hope, and resilience in the face of oppressive traditions.
Nawi is a visually stunning film, featuring natural cinematography that captures both the beauty and complexity of the Kenyan landscape. Michelle Lemuya Ikeny delivers a powerful performance in the lead role, bringing to life a character that reflects the dreams of many African girls. More than just a film, Nawi is an important reminder of the injustices young women still face and is a strong contribution to African cinema.
