Frederick Wiseman is the great master of observational documentary. This time, he takes you inside three restaurants operated by the renowned Troisgros family. Nothing here is left to chance. One of the restaurants has held no less than three Michelin stars for a staggering 55 years.
Read moreThe film runs for four hours - which isn't particularly long for Wiseman. His films, often focusing on American institutions, take their time to illuminate them from a multitude of perspectives, making them exceptionally rich and nuanced. This was the case with, for example, City Hall (2020), which was featured in Kosmorama's digital festival in 2021.
In Menus-Plaisirs - Les Troisgros, he takes you on a fascinating deep dive into a world of details, where you simply drift away and quickly lose track of time. Everything from ingredients, preparation, and service is carefully considered, and Wiseman direct a spotlight on the many aspects of the restaurants' daily life and operations. This film is yet another confirmation that Wiseman, now well into his 90s, remains one of the world's foremost documentarians.
