Single mother Maia lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter Alex. On Christmas Eve, a large box of old notebooks, pictures and cassette tapes appears, which Maia had sent to a friend in the 80's. Maia refuses to open it, but secretly Alex dives in and peeks at the contents of this mysterious box, gaining new insight into her mother's enigmatic and tumultuous past in war-torn Lebanon.
Memory Box is a gripping story about memories, lies and how different generations relate to the recent past. A unique ensemble of actors makes this multi-faceted narrative shine in all its glory.
Joana Hadjithomas draws inspiration from her own diaries and Khalil Joreige uses her personal archive images in this film, which they wrote and directed together. The film is colourful and stylish, a visual delight from start to finish.
