Angelina Jolie returns to the screen in this year’s closing film, Maria. Following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021), Pablo Larraín completes his “Lady with Heels” trilogy with a film about the life and career of opera singer Maria Callas.
On September 16, 1977, Maria (Angelina Jolie) is found dead in her apartment by her longtime companions, butler Ferruccio and housekeeper Bruna. The story of Maria Callas thus begins at the end, offering glimpses into her life and the events that led her there. Director Larraín blends a dreamlike aesthetic with deeply moving musical performances. In Maria, Callas’ emotions are felt in every frame, masterfully portrayed by Jolie.
Jolie was the only choice for the title role when Pablo Larraín set out to depict Maria Callas’ final days. She trained for months with an opera singer to prepare, and the film features a mix of Jolie’s voice and original recordings of Callas herself.
Angelina Jolie was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Maria, and the film also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
Before the screening of the closing film, the winners of Kosmorama’s New Directors Award and Audience Award will be announced.
