An island in Louisiana is slowly being swallowed by the sea. The families who still live there face an almost impossible choice: stay for as long as possible as the water rises, or abandon their homes and leave. Read moreDanish director Sandra Winther has created a visually striking documentary in which both landscape and community take on a dreamlike beauty. Over several years, she followed the protagonists closely. The project began as a short film in 2019, but the story was far from over. In 2021, Hurricane Ida caused devastating destruction on the island. The project transformed into a feature-length documentary co-produced by Darren Aronofsky.
Through cinematography, editing, music, and sound design, the film merges into a deeply atmospheric whole – a sensorial documentary about a community that may soon be lost forever.
