Taeko lives a pleasant and peaceful life with her husband Jiro and young son Keita. All this changes suddenly when tragedy strikes, bringing the boy's biological father and Jiro’s ex-girlfriend back into the frame, altering the balance and boundaries between grief and shame, loneliness and love.
Director Kôji Fukada’s delightfully shot and sombre melodrama juxtaposes small quirks with strong emotions. The film treats universal themes with elegance and uniqueness, and provides a thought-provoking account of both unity and breakdown of a family unit and the love life of the title.
Taking its title and inspiration from the song Love Life by renowned performer Akiko Yano, the film deservedly became the talk of several of the more prestigious film festivals last year.
