End this year’s Kosmorama with an intense, fever-dream of a film! Rose Byrne won a Golden Globe for her powerful leading performance in this psychological drama, filled with both unease and comedy.
Psychotherapist Linda is on the brink of collapse. Her daughter is seriously ill, her husband is constantly away, and everything grinds to a halt when parts of the ceiling in their home collapse. Mother and daughter are forced to check into a run-down motel, while insomnia and guilt push Linda ever deeper into chaos—both personally and professionally. Desperately, she tries to maintain control as the black hole in the ceiling grows increasingly mysterious.
Rose Byrne gives Linda a vulnerability and a rage that make her both frustrating and deeply sympathetic. Conan O’Brien delivers a brilliant performance as Linda’s own psychotherapist, revealing sides of himself very different from what we are used to seeing on television.
Director Mary Bronstein has made an original and uncompromising film. It masterfully balances situational comedy with psychological unease, as dark discomfort alternates with moments of humor.
Before the screening of the closing film, the winners of Kosmorama’s New Directors Award and the Audience Award will be announced.
Rose Byrne has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in this film.
