Harald Henden was one of Norway’s most renowned war photographers. For 35 years, he worked for the newspaper VG in war zones around the world, documenting the horrors of conflict at close range. Several of his photographs have become iconic. In this powerful documentary, we meet Henden after he has been diagnosed with incurable cancer. We are given rare insight into the man behind the images, as he looks back on his career while fighting his most personal and final battle.

Director Rune Denstad Langlo has created a warm, honest, and intimate portrait of a war photographer. Henden reflects on the extreme existence of being constantly on standby for war, while simultaneously navigating a life full of contrasts – from book releases and public recognition to the relentless progression of his illness. The film balances all these elements, always keeping the human being at its core.

This film is part of the Reprise program, in which five Kosmorama staff members select memorable cinema experiences from 2025. Industry coordinator Asbjørn Tiller chose Henden – Requiem for a Photographer, saying:

I chose this film because of the insight it offers—into a deeply demanding profession, the conflict zones he has worked in, and how these experiences shape Henden toward the end of his life. This is one of the strongest and most important Norwegian films of last year, and it presents a universal approach to the themes it explores.
