17-year-old Izzy lives an isolated life in the woods with her mother. They live largely in harmony with nature and play in their own punk band in their spare time. It is Izzy’s rare immune disease that has kept her isolated, but when she secretly finds some friends and begins pushing the boundaries set by her mother, she finds that new and frightening forces are awoken. It turns out that they are descendants of a special type of witches, so-called "hellbenders", and there is clearly a reason why the mother has kept Izzy isolated.

Add to this Zelda's father, John Adams, with whom they have written and directed the film, and you have a unique family project. Through this and their previous film The Deeper You Dig (2019), this modern Adams family has created their own visually evocative style, which they use to tell innovative stories with a creative twist on traditional horror tropes.
Hellbender is a bloody, well-directed coming-of-age horror film, featuring accomplished actors and a classy soundtrack. It’s got cult classic written all over it.
