Dag Hammarskjöld was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and was one of the world's foremost diplomats in his time. In 1961, Dag Hammarskjöld has one more year in his position as the UN Secretary-General, following the Norwegian Trygve Lie. After this year, he plans to move back to Österlen and finally leave behind politics. The Cold War dominates, and in Africa a deep conflict splits Congo.

Dag Hammarskjöld takes on the complicated mission of mediating peace and unity in the volatile conflict in the divided country. An impossible task according to many, a suicide mission according to others.

The film is directed by Danish filmmaker Per Fly, known for critically acclaimed films such as The Bench (2000), The Inheritance (2003), and Monica Z (2013). With Hammarskjöld, he has created one of the biggest Scandinavian films this winter. It also has a touch of Trøndelag, as the music by composer Raymond Enoksen was recorded at Øra Studio with pianist Else Bø and musicians from the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Trondheimsolistene. We look forward to opening the festival with this fantastic film about one of the world's most famous peace advocates and his mysterious fate.
