In post-war Germany, Hans is repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for the crime of being gay, for which he had previously been interned in a concentration camp. With peacetime bringing no freedom to Hans, he develops an unexpected and close relationship with cellmate Viktor, who is serving a long-term sentence for murder.
