In the well-to-do area of Constantia in Cape Town, single mother Tsidi has to move in with her mother, Mavis, who has worked as a housekeeper for bedridden Madam Diane for over 30 years. While living in Diane's roomy, yet ultimately unwelcoming house, Tsidi becomes increasingly unsettled by her mother's extreme submissiveness and devotion to her white employer. Slowly but surely, the dark truth about the relationship between Mavis and Madam Diane comes to the surface.

The action takes place in an old Dutch house, which could easily fit into the role of a rambling old Gothic mansion more suited to traditional horror films. Filled with statues, porcelain figurines and wood sculptures of caricatured Africans, we are constantly reminded that this is a house filled with oppression and apartheid.

South African director Jenna Cato Bass has created an eerie, psychological thriller imbued with post-colonialism and remnants of South Africa's troubled past.
