16-year-old Marieme lives in harsh conditions in a suburb of Paris. She lags behind at school, takes care of her little siblings, and has to help her mother at work. In addition, she is manipulated by her big brother. When she meets Lady, Adiatou and Fily, the seeds of liberation are sown. She gets herself a new style, changes her name, drops out of school and starts stealing to become part of the gang. But is this new life the way to happiness?

Marieme is beautifully and vulnerably portrayed by Karidja Touré, while Assa Sylla’s petty crime gang leader Lady is powerful. The scene where the girls dance to Rihanna's "Diamonds", bringing their lust for life and energy to the fore, has been called a modern classic by film critic Dag Sødtholt.
