Director Céline Sciamma’s realistic depiction of life in the disadvantaged area of Le Clos-Français in Montreuil is compelling, thanks to a brilliant cast of amateur actors. Marieme is beautifully and vulnerably portrayed by Karidja Touré, while Assa Sylla’s petty crime gang leader Lady is powerful. The scene where the girls dance to Rihanna's "Diamonds", bringing their lust for life and energy to the fore, has been called a modern classic by film critic Dag Sødtholt.
