After chronicling the Apartheid, Ernest Cole lived and died in exile far away from his home in South Africa. Now director Raoul Peck shines a light on his extraordinary story.
In the 1950s, Ernest Cole worked as a photographer in his home country of South Africa, gradually becoming a vocal critic of the apartheid system. This ultimately forced him to flee in the 1960s, ending up in New York with a suitcase full of negatives.
Through multiple parallel narratives, the film provides a nuanced insight into the photographer’s life. However, all the stories eventually lead to the same place—a vault in Stockholm.
Directed by Raoul Peck, Ernest Cole: Lost and Found brings new life into Coles body of work through clever use of his photos and stills from New York in the 60s and 70s. The result is a personal tribute as well as a gripping documentary about one the lost political voices of South Africa.
