His portrayal of childhood in The Spirit of Beehive (1973) is hailed by many as one of the best Spanish films ever and was a clear inspiration for Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth (2006).
With Close Your Eyes, Erice has created another solid masterpiece. Already in the opening scene, which is a film-within-a-film scene, he demonstrates his unique ability to orchestrate captivating dialogue scenes and get the most out of the actors.
