On the outskirts of a remote Costa Rican mountain village, Clara, her mother and niece receive visits from those who want to be healed. Clara is a withdrawn woman who, according to her mother, possesses healing properties bestowed upon her by the Virgin Mary. Clara gradually becomes fed up with the strict social conventions in the religious household, and breaks out of the mould, awakening her feminine instincts in a sexual revolt - in her 40s.
Clara Sola is a visually stunning and formidable feature film debut by Swedish-Costa Rican Nathalie Álvarez Mesén. Religion and free sexuality have rarely gone hand in hand, and the director anchors the story with magical realism and exceptionally beautiful cuts. This, the first film role for actor Wendy Chinchilla Araya in a main role, sees her painting a compelling portrait of an extraordinary woman.
The film had its world premiere in 2021 at the Directors Fortnight program in Cannes.
