This opulent costume drama tells the true but largely unknown story of the violinist and composer Chevalier de Saint-Georges. His musical talent arouses excitement among the aristocrats of Paris, but as the son of an African slave and her owner, he was met with a great deal of hostility and racism. This also leads to a falling out with Queen Marie Antoinette.

In an electrifying opening scene, Chevalier crashes a Mozart concert and challenges the prodigy to a thrilling violin duel, and from there the intensity does not let up. The sense of drama escalates with the rising fury of the French people, who will soon be in the throes of a bloody revolution.

It is a joy to experience the lavish production design and the beguiling costumes working side by side with this magnificent story. The film is both a feast for the eyes and a grandiose symphony for the ears. Music biographies don't get more epic than this.
