Without realizing it, medical student Witek finds himself at a decisive moment in life as he sprints to catch a train. From here, the film splits into three different narrative paths, depending on whether he makes it or not. In one version, he becomes a member of the Communist Party; in another, he joins the opposition; in the third, he attempts to live an apolitical life. Small coincidences lead to enormous consequences.

Krzysztof Kieslowski weaves personal choices together with Poland’s political reality under communism. Completed in 1981, the film’s release was halted by authorities and it was only released in censored form in 1987. Kieslowski would later go on to make The Double Life of Véronique (1991), also screened at this year’s Kosmorama, as well as the Three Colours trilogy (1993–1994).

Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland has described Blind Chance as possibly Kieslowski’s best and most original film. Tightly constructed and brilliantly performed, Bogusław Linda shines in the lead role.

Another Kieslowski film, The Double Life of Véronique (1991), is also screened at Kosmorama 2026.
