Filmmaker Andrea Arnold is back with a new masterpiece, filled with gritty social realism and heartwarming humanism. Twelve-year-old Bailey lives in poverty with her half-brother Hunter and irresponsible father, Bug. One day, she meets a mysterious man who calls himself Bird. He seems to be a free-spirited and eccentric soul searching for his roots. It doesn’t take long before Bailey and Bird form a strong bond—one that becomes crucial for both of them as they navigate their harsh surroundings.
The film depicts a world where the adults can barely take care of themselves, while the young protagonist has to navigate towards an adult life without good role models to look up to. Newcomer Nykiya Adams sparkles in the role of Bailey, while Barry Keoghan delivers a powerful performance as her unstable father.
Andrea Arnold, who is one of British film's foremost directors, is back with a new masterpiece. With hard-nosed social realism and warm-hearted humanism, she has created a gripping and intense coming-of-age drama, filled with strong character portrayals and wonderful surprises.
