The ultimate blockbuster! Wealthy Jewish merchant Judah Ben-Hur is sold as a galley slave, but returns to Jerusalem 3 years later a free man hell-bent on revenge. This culminates in what is arguably the most famous race in film history.
Read moreBen-Hur single-handedly saved MGM from bankruptcy in 1959. With a budget of 15 million dollars, it was at the time the most expensive film in history, though it did manage to gross a whopping 90 million dollars. The film also won eleven Academy Awards, a record that has only been equalled by Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).
The enormous success of Ben-Hur led to the film becoming the template for how future blockbusters were produced. Thousands of extras, sumptuous sets and electrifying action sequences would follow, but no subsequent film would be able to live up to Ben-Hur. Even over 60 years later it continues to impress with its sheer opulence and compelling story. They simply don't make films like this anymore. This is peak Hollywood!
